Knowing the Difference in Types of Women’s Fragrance and Perfume

If you’ve ever been shopping for women’s fragrance you already know there are several types available. Most people don’t know the difference and end up using a product that may not be the best fit for them. You’ll see terms like Eau de Toilette, Cologne, body sprays, and many others. This can be confusing as they are all different. To make it more confusing, most fragrance designers offer their products in all of these varieties. Here are the basics to help you out.

Concentrations and Longevity

The biggest difference in the different types of women’s fragrances will be the concentration of oils used in the product. The higher the concentration, the stronger the scent will be and the longer it will last.
An Eau de toilette product will have a concentration of between 4 and 10 percent oil in the mixture. You can expect these to last up to 6 hours when worn. They are also not the best fragrance choice for daytime activities. Many people will have reactions to strong fragrances, so these should be used for night life and avoided in  the office. Cologne products typically have a concentration between 2 and 5 percent. These are more commonly seen in men’s products, but many women’s products have started to use this formulation for a lighter scent. They also won’t last as long, maybe a couple of hours. This
makes a cologne a good choice for day time settings, including the office. Body sprays and spritzes will have a concentration of 1 percent or less. These aren’t designed to provide a full day of fragrance, but will refresh your scent throughout the day. These will only last for about an hour, but are perfect for those who want to recreate a scent throughout the day, especially during office hours after you’ve taken a break outdoors.

Choosing A Fragrance

Everyone has a different opinion regarding what they like and don’t. Your individual body chemistry can also make fragrances smell differently on you than they do on others. The best way to choose a fragrance is to smell them in the store and get samples. Try the fragrance on the interior of your wrist, and then wait about 30 minutes and smell it again. If the smell still suits you, then you should make the purchase. It’s not uncommon for people to like a smell in the bottle just to discover they don’t like it after it’s been worn.
